My patch of garlic mustard is shooting up and will be in bloom in a matter of days! I even saw a white butterfly hanging around them which made me cringe...it is toxic to their caterpillars and they confuse it with native Toothwort!
Get ready to pull it, bag it, and take it to your local dump or invasive plant incinerator (the Concord Compost Site has a nice one). Composting on your own property is unwise, I'd sooner put it out on the curb with the trash. Make sure to get the whole tap root! And don't worry about the baby garlic mustard plants with fragile roots, just come back for them next year. It is a biennial plant meaning it flowers in its second year. |
