About the Backyard Invasives Project
The purpose of the Backyard Invasives Project is to assist landowners in removing problematic plants and encouraging them to keep/add native plants that contribute to our ecosystem. Through purposeful stewardship of our environment and propagation of native plants on our public and private properties, we can restore the food source for native pollinators and wildlife and do our part to slow the mass extinctions due to loss of habitat around the world.
ABOUT ME
I studied environmental science and plant biology at the University of Vermont. Since graduating, I interned with the Natural Heritage & Endangered Species Program in Massachusetts, worked as a field technician in Colorado doing plant and soil surveys, and interned with Vermont State Parks as part of the Habitat Restoration crew. When I moved home to Concord, I realized just how many invasive species were present and how little food we had planted in our yards for birds and wildlife. It is my goal to provide the resources and connection to Native Plants that it takes to restore habitat and coexist within an ecosystem.

Book RecommendatioN:
Douglas Tallamy lays out a clear plan for restoring native plants in his book Nature's Best Hope. I highly recommend it to anyone that wants to know WHY restoring habitat in their own backyards is the path forward. This book gave me hope in imagining a suburban landscape that coexists with pollinators, birds, and wildlife. What if backyards along the monarch migration route started to celebrate the arrival of the monarchs by planting Joe Pye Weed and Milkweed to welcome them? How much money and water would we save if we tore up our lawns and threw down native wildflower seed? Exotic annual flowers are fun, but perennial or self seeding natives take less money, labor, and resources. Do your local ecosystem a favor by planting native.
