Black Swallowwort (Cynanchum Louiseae)
WARNING: toxic to dogs, butterflies, horses, humans.
This plant creates dense thickets, and is toxic to Monarch Butterfly caterpillars. The roots are very fragile so caution must be taken when digging them up, or it will grow back.
Removal Tips
It is important to loosen soil underneath with a shovel to ensure you get all of the fragile white roots. Hand pulling will result in the plant breaking and re-sprouting next season. It's also important to remove the plant before the seed pods develop and burst, spreading via wind and forming colonies of seedlings.
Native plant replacement: Clematis or Milkweed
Ornamental climbing plants like Swallowwort are beautiful, but are toxic to Monarch butterfly larva. Climbing Clematis and Milkweed are much more friendly to pollinators, consider adding these to your yard!
